This is a basic miming exercise which develops the most fundamental and important skills to mime work. Please keep in mind:
- Stops are important. The stop helps the audience define the object you are trying to get them to see. It is like punctuation in the visual story you are telling when working with mime.
- Stay loose. Although the work requires a very strong focus and concentration, allow the muscles to be loose and the breathing to be easy while you work. There should be a sense of ease in your body.
- Your eyes are the key. While it's important to build accuracy with the hands and the rest of the body, the eyes are the key to making your imagination become a real and tangible thing. Develop your eye focus and your imagination, and your body will follow.
Drawing with Chalk
At it's most basic, this exercise is creating a point in space and manipulating it. We create a small object (a piece of chalk) and put it on a 2-dimensional plane (a chalkboard) and we move it through space. To apply force to an object, the body moves before we can apply force. The body moves, and then the hand moves.

Moving a Stick
Applying various forces (pushing, pulling, sliding, turning) on a stick that's stuck in space. As with the Drawing with Chalk exercise, the body moves in the direction that you want the force to be applied, and the hands follow.
